the SHADOWSIDE TRILOGY –

Fantasy/sci-fi for young teens.

Trion Rising • The Owling • Beyond Corista

In book one of the trilogy, Trion Rising, things couldn’t be better for 15-year-old Oriannon and her friend Margus. Life is good on the bright side of the planet Corista.

But when a strange new music mentor begins to teach them a different way to play their songs, she’s not sure she wants things to change… that much. Could he really be a Faithbreaker, an enemy, the way Oriannon’s father says? And when she finds herself lost on the Shadowside, can the once self-centered Orianon follow her heart... and save half the planet?

In book two of the trilogy, The Owling, the planet of Corista has been thrown off its axis. In the midst of global chaos, Oriannon's former music mentor Jesmet miraculously returns and promises a special power called the Numa. Meanwhile Sola, Corista's charismatic head of Security, proposes the "ultimate solution" for peace. Can Oriannon trust either of them?

In book three, Beyond Corista, war is sure to erupt on Corista and beyond—unless Oriannon and her friends can alert space outposts of the coming danger... from a people no one has ever seen. Is Oriannon's vision of Jesmet's warning only an illusion? The exciting series conclusion! (Available mid-April, 2009)

THE WALL Series  – A trilogy of exciting Cold War adventures for middle readers.

Candy Bombers                Beetle Bunker                   Smuggler’s Treasure

In book one of this series, cousins Erich and Katarina find that survival in post-World War II Berlin isnt easy, especially when the Russians impose a 24/7 blockade around the city. But everything changes when they sneak inside an American cargo plane and meet a U.S. airman named Fred DeWitt. Though Erich has plenty of reasons to resent this man, in the end they must decide: cling to bitterness, or learn to forgive?

In book two we fast-forward to 1961, when Cold War tensions peak and the Berlin Wall traps Sabine and her friend Willi on the wrong side of the city. Though handicapped by childhood polio, Sabine (Erichs younger half-sister) learns to trade weakness for trust when she discovers a forgotten underground bunker. In the end it could take them under the wall to freedom, or into more danger than ever.

In the final book of this trilogy, Willi and Sabines daughter, Liesl, is looking for a cause. Its early 1989, life is good, and the Cold War seems to be thawing slowly. But as Liesl works on a class project about her family, she uncovers a startling secret about her American grandfather, thanks to a boy from Wyoming. And no one expects what would ultimately happen to the wall that has separated her family for years.

In my first series, the "Young Underground," each book is based on a real historical event or character. They're set in World War II-Denmark. It was a natural, because my family is Danish; both my parents grew up during that time. I would look into history books for exciting things that happened, then ask them questions to find out how it really happened. A Danish man—I used to clean his yard and he was a friend of my parents—would tell me stories about being in the Danish Underground movement, and one of the stories he told me inspired book number three, Into the Flames. My uncle was in the Underground, too, although I never met him. I hope you'll enjoy reading these adventures as much as I enjoyed writing them. -Robert

These eight adventures were inspired by my connection to the wonderful country of Australia through my uncle, who immigrated there in the late 1940s. The "adventures Down Under" begins years before that, however, in 1868, following the pioneer adventures of the McWaid family. From their beginnings in Dublin to their danger-filled trip up the Murray River, you'll follow the McWaids "down under," and maybe learn a few things along the way!

Brother Enemy                   Freedom Trap                     True Betrayer

These stories are close to my heart, inspired by the life of a Holocaust survivor I met while researching the series in Jerusalem. Set in 1948, the adventures follow a young Jewish teen, Dov, and Emily, the daughter of a British army officer. Together they witness the explosive events around them as the state of Israel emerges from the ashes of World War Two.

Okay, I admit: I probably watched too many episodes of "Star Trek" as I was growing up. The good news is that these stories are inspired by classic sci-fi, but provide fun, fast-paced reads for seven- to eleven-year-olds. They've been described as a sort of Christian Jetsons. So follow the misadventures of five young kids in the year 2175 as they explore the solar system from their space station home.

Eat My Martian Dust

Officially this is "a collection of science fiction stories by various authors: Robert Elmer and Michael Carroll, editors." Unofficially, Mike and I put this sci-fi collection together just for fun. If you enjoy science fiction, each story is as different as the author, and each one weaves their faith into the telling. For the sci-fi fans in your family, this makes a fun gift, too. Autographed copies are still available. For more information click here.
